Planting seeds

In first grade, boys and girls learn about living things by planting seeds and gradually observing the growth process of plants as living things. They learned that plants need solar energy, water, and nutrients to be alive. The students went to the school garden dressed as farmers and planted radish seeds, a vegetable that few of them knew, about which they also had an introduction from the English area through the story “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”, because the rabbit loves to eat radishes. Weekly they recorded the growth of the seeds that were planted through a plant field diary.

Proposing these type of activities makes children build knowledge in a meaningful way because they bring what they learn in the classroom into the real context and this makes learning much more meaningful for them. It is also possible to develop in first-year boys and girls the attributes of the IB profile as inquirers, thinkers, and good communicators by representing the plant growth process through drawings, words and socializing with their peers. The students thoroughly enjoyed the activity.

Plantando semillas

En el grado de primero, los niños y niñas aprenden sobre los seres vivos al plantar semillas y observar poco a poco el proceso de crecimiento de las plantas como seres vivos. Aprendieron que las plantas necesitan luz solar, agua y nutrientes para poder vivir. Los estudiantes fueron a la huerta del colegio vestidos como granjeros y plantaron semillas de rábano, verdura que pocos de ellos conocían, de la cual también tuvieron acercamiento desde el área de inglés a través del cuento “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”, pues al conejo le encantaba comer rábanos. Semanalmente, los niños fueron registrando el crecimiento de las semillas que se plantaron a través de un diario de campo.

Proponer este tipo de actividades hace que los niños construyan el conocimiento de una manera significativa pues llevan al contexto real lo aprendido en el aula de clase y esto hace que el aprendizaje tenga mucho más sentido para ellos. También se logra desarrollar en los niños y niñas de primero los atributos del perfil IB como indagadores, pensadores y buenos comunicadores al representar por medio de dibujos y palabras el proceso de crecimiento de la planta y socializar con sus compañeros. La actividad fue del total agrado de los estudiantes.
